NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

Children of the Unkept Park Grass

Abandoned plastic playground toys half-swallowed by tall grass at dusk, pale children's faces showing between them.

In the shadowy field of Victory Heights Park, neighbors swore they heard them: the Children of the Unkept Park Grass, their hushed giggles drifting through five-foot-tall weeds.

ROADS & TERRORS

The Legend of the Haunted Cherry Picker

A glowing pumpkin-headed phantom in a pinstripe suit riding the basket of an abandoned Genie S-40 boom lift on a foggy road.

The sleepy roads of Victory Heights were haunted not by a shadowy steed, but by the sputtering diesel roar of an abandoned Genie boom lift, upon which perched the terror of the park glen: a towering phantom whose suit was finely tailored, yet whose head was a glaring, hollowed-out pumpkin flickering with the pale light of an LED tea candle.

WATERFRONT DESK

Lady of the Lime Scooter

A translucent woman in a long gown standing on a green e-scooter atop a puddle, holding a jelly doughnut.

On moonlit nights, the pristine waters of Victory Lake (the expansive puddle at the intersection of 20th Ave and 105th) ripple with the eerie hum of the Lime Scooter Lady, a damp specter who glides across the black surface atop a neon-green e-scooter.

Poetry Corner

The Honey Bucket Raven

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I sat inside, exhausted and weary,
taking refuge in the dim plastic walls of a park Honey Bucket, cold and dreary.

Suddenly there came a knocking, an impatient, rhythmic rocking,
As a raven tapped the outhouse door, set on getting in and unlocking.

“It's occupied!” I muttered, but the bird just flapped and fluttered,
Demanding I vacate the seat for which he frantically muttered.

He needed a quick pit stop before taking flight so fleet and clever,
To roost in distant Bothell and sleep with all the ravens forever.

So I scrambled out in fright into the dark and chilly night,
And he slammed the plastic door shut, croaking: “Nevermore in sight!”
